births/deaths stuff

A very short special edition of the notes to acknowledge the passing of Wolfgang ‘Mim’ Sievers who shuffled off this mortal coil on Monday night. He was aged 94. A great photographer, a man of passion and principle, Mim Sievers was adamant that, when the time came, he wouldn’t have a funeral. Be that as is may, keep your eyes and ears peeled as I am sure there will be something organised to acknowledge his contribution to photography in Australia and to acknowledge his passing.

You be the judge stuff

I guess everyone is too busy to look at pictures nowadays, either that or they are intimidated by having to look at pictures and make a choice as to which is the best of the 2006 head On Portrait prize entries. They are all up on the HeadOn website http://www.headon.com.au Scroll through the images and make your choice as to which image you think should have won HeadOn 2006. Be decisive - choose one image only, and send a note to free radicaloz [at] gmail.com
with the author name of your pick in the subject line. I don’t need a critique on the whys and wherefores - just the name of the author - you don’t even have to write anything in the body of the email, although if you would like to write an editorial piece for a future edition of the notes you are more than welcome to do so.
After we have a considerable number of votes I will tally the results and we will see if free radical consensus matches that of the 2006 HeadOn judges.

In the short time since edition # 87 hit your screens we have had only 2 responses - one of which couldn’t find anything inspirational enough to vote for. We need more votes!! - so extract the proverbial digit, hit the head on link and spend a few minutes making your choice.

Lee Miller's War comes to Monash Gallery of Art from the Lee Miller Archives in England and presents 110 photographs by one of the world's most influential and remarkable photographers.
Lee Miller's War presents works created during 1944-45 when Miller visited hospitals in Normandy and travelled through Germany, France, Austria, Hungary and Romania, as an official war correspondent for Vogue . Her unflinching documentation and commentary of what she witnessed shocked and educated the world to the horrors and futility of war.

plus Falling through days by Karina Grundy: show current to18 AUGUST Karina Grundy's new exhibition is a portrait of the contemporary Australian family. She has an eye for the social political barb, satirical comment and the ordinariness of the everyday.
Grundy's photographs are staged in a studio setting supported by the most basic furniture ensembles – as if nothing else matters. Family members encounter each other in various domestic scenarios, seemingly cut off from the world and struggling with their identity in spite of conflicting loyalties and passions. These works are theatrical in mode - we suspend any disbelief and are prepared to go with her - ensuing an empathy with the subjects and scenarios.
