editorial stuff

the following lobbed in the mail box from Robin Gauld [fr#666] in Townsville

'BAN ALL PUBLIC PHOTOGRAPHY: Duncan Dodd of Maxwell Optical Industries Pty. Ltd. writes: "Believe it or not, proposals to ban all public photography are before a Federal Government Committee in Australia. An online petition against this is at http://www.petitiononline.com/ausphoto/petition.html

No I haven't yet checked the bona fides of this, for I have resolved to spend less time in front of the purple television and more time getting dirt under my fingernails, but I don't doubt it's veracity for one moment. One can only wonder where our world is headed. With the current inquest into the demise of Diana ten years ago [lets hope the trail of the conspirators has not gone cold in the ensuing decade] the venal paparazzi are currently large in the public eye ' and by association, photographers from all other walks of life. I have had it suggested that this is the responsibility of the publishing industry, but I think it is the responsibility of the readership. If the stupid people who purchase the mags weren't so obsessed with the cult of celebrity, there would be no market for the generally photographically untalented dregs who shoot the stuff. It's a pity those 'save us from ourselves' zealots who want to ban public photography couldn't turn their hand to banning something of value to society. How about 'Ban greed' or 'Ban war'

Births and death stuff

The following is just in from Jacqui Henshaw [fr#52] I didn't know Michael, but if any of you did and can help with Jacqui's request, let me know and I will put you in touch[editor]
I am not sure if you knew Michael McCubbery. He passed away the 10th of Oct. He was a wonderful friend of mine and Igor Sapina and many others....he assisted John Street, Myself, Paul Torcello, Chris Budgeon. Basically he was a great friend and everyone loved him even if all his jokes were not brilliant. He shone like a beacon!!! I want to do something for him. Although he fought cancer twice he ended up dying from other complications. I would like to maybe get any photographer who has photo of michael or ditti or a note to share, maybe we can create a book for his family, or even a donation from all the photographers that knew him to donate one image of their own work that typifies their passion and we could sell this book for the Peter Mc Callum research. Michael loved creating images and loved others who loved his passion.

You be the judge stuff

We now have 32 responses to the special free radical judging of the 2007 Head On alternative portrait prize. That's six more than we had prior to the last newsletter but still not a large enough sample to give a definitive winner. We currently have 3 portraits with 3 votes each, and 2 on 2 votes and the rest are singles. They are all up on the HeadOn website http://www.headon.com.au Scroll through the images and make your choice as to which image you think should have won HeadOn 2007. Be decisive - choose one image only, and send an email to free radicaloz [at] gmail.com with the authors name of your pick in the subject line.

Exgesis a group show by Michael Ammendolia, Warren Clarke, Nick Cubbin, Nick Moir, David Dare Parker [fr #540] Emmanuel Santos and Tamara Voninski.
Exegesis, or explanation, is a metaphor for our exhibiting photographers' representation of defining moments in cultural behavior - rituals that make us human. Exegesis is the finely balanced negotiation between these photographers and their subjects. The exhibiting photographers have substantial portfolios, and hold prestigious photographic awards. These photographers are committed to providing an exegesis of real lives and real stories too often overlooked by mainstream media. AT Obscura Gallery 285 Carlisle St East St Kilda. Since the inaugural exhibition in 1997, this event has grown in profile and significance. It represents a unique, national initiative in support of documentary photography, providing a rare opportunity to assess the themes, styles and ideas that characterise this fascinating genre. This year's exhibition demonstrates the breadth of contemporary approaches to documentary practice from traditional black and white narratives through to vibrant colour recordings all of which have been achieved without digital manipulation.
